A: Access to Primary Health Care among members of Self Help Groups
In 2021, about 4.5 billion people, more than half of the global population, were not fully covered by essential health services (WHO 2023). Achieving universal health coverage (UHC), i.e. that everyone has access to quality health services when and where they need them, without facing financial hardship, by 2030 is crucial for fulfilling the promise of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and realizing the fundamental human right to health.
However, the various ongoing crises have resulted in limited financial resources for health, such as decreased national budgets and international funds. Therefore, strategic, effective and efficient approaches to strengthen health systems for universal health coverage are essential. The Primary Health Care (PHC) approach can fulfill just that. PHC is a whole-of-society approach to effectively organize and strengthen national health systems to bring services for health and wellbeing closer to communities.
PHC is widely regarded as the most inclusive, equitable and cost-effective way to achieve universal health coverage. Significant cost efficiencies can be achieved, and most (90%) essential UHC interventions can be delivered through a PHC approach. It is also key to strengthening the resilience of health systems to prepare for, respond to and recover from shocks and crises. Digital approaches can further improve access to care, particularly in low-resource settings, by reducing costs and bringing healthcare delivery in real-time.
